County Government

Ottawa County is located 174 miles west of Detroil and 150 miles northeast of Chicago. Ottawa county is composed of 17 townships, six cities and one village, with an area of 565 square miles. Thirty-eight (38%) percent of the County's land mass is farmland.

Local Government

The communities of Ferrysburg, Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Spring Lake Township, and Grand Haven Township all have a common goal: to provide an excellent quality of life for their residents in a safe, stable environment. The governments of all five municipalities are progressive and alert to the needs of their residents.


The City of Ferrysburg is the smallest municipality of the Tri-Cities. It was formed in 1963 when the residents, then part of Spring Lake Township, voted to incorporate as a city. Ferrysburg is governed on the city-manager system with a city council headed by the mayor.

The City of Grand Haven was established in the 1834 and incorporated in 1867. It is the county seat of Ottawa County and has a city-manager form of government with four councilmembers and a mayor on the council.

Spring Lake Village is located across from Ferrysburg on the east side of lovely, spring-fed Spring Lake. It was founded as Mill Point in 1864 and incorporated under its present name in 1867. It has a village-manager form of government with a village president who sits on the seven-member council.

Spring Lake Township is a rapidly growing township. The township is governed by an elected supervisor and board of trustees consisting of 4 persons plus the clerk and treasurer.

Grand Haven Township is located to the south and east of the city of Grand Haven. It is a charter township and is managed by a full-time township manager. The township is governed by the township supervisor and a board of trustees.
